Early in the game, she saves Marlene from the impending collapse of the Sector 7 plate, knowing that it will get her captured by the nefarious Shinra corporation. She willingly offers herself as a potential girl-for-the-night for a creepy organized crime lord to save a fellow party member Tifa. Most notably, she realizes that the one defense against the ultimate destructive magic Meteor is the Planet's ultimate defensive force Holy and goes off to summon it herself as the last of the Cetra-- an action that leads to her death.
Though she's gentle and kind, it would be foolish to mistake this for weakness. Aerith is assertive and stubborn, rarely dissuaded from something when she's set her mind to it. From the moment they're aware of her existence, Shinra attempts to recruit her as the last of the Cetra, but Aerith spends years avoiding them, escaping them and refusing them if she can't do either. She holds to her beliefs and her ideals, and doesn't back down even when threatened.
Also, she enjoys making Cloud crossdress.
